There are five main curriculum areas in a Montessori education:
1. Practical Life – Purposeful everyday living exercises are designed to develop independence, confidence, coordination, concentration, order, and a sense of responsibility.
2. Sensorial – Sensory materials instruct the child to learn through use of the five senses. Incorporating the senses brings about greater understanding for identification, comparison of size and shape, gradation of colors, sounds, scents, and sizes.
3. Language – Early language skills taught are matching, sorting, rhyming, opposites, classification, and sequencing. When ready the children learn to read phonetically using the sandpaper letters. These letters are used as a foundation in both reading and writing.
4. Math- Math begins with materials that teach numeral recognition, association of symbol with quantity, and one to one correspondence. Then we move on to the process of operations which is addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Next is the memorization of math facts. Finally, these two disciplines are used together to form the foundation for working complex math problems.
5. Art – Two forms of art are used. Free form, where the child uses their own creativity to make what is uniquely their own. Teacher directed, where a sample is provided, and direction is given to create a
EXTRA CURRICULAR – Science, Geography, Cultural Studies, Grace and Courtesy, Spanish and Music are offered once a week.
Cultural Studies – Montessori cultural exercises focus on allowing children to experience their place in the world and gain an appreciation and respect for different diversities. These exercises explore cultures, while teaching that all beings are fundamentally related. These areas of learning helps children discover the world around them and understand their own significance in it.
Cultural Studies explore a variety of topics such as: Geography, Zoology, Physics, Botany, History, Art & Music
